What is this project all about?
The "Auch wenn es Flucht bedeutet…" project is an
international, non-commercial three-day art festival, that is
scheduled to take place at GlogauAir / Berlin from November 4-6,
2016, for the first time. The festival invites (young) artists from
different countries and disciplines to creatively deal with current
societal conditions in Europe. It is meant to be a platform for
inspiration and international networking and furthermore to promote
intercultural understanding and exchange. Because we want to make
culture and art accessible to everyone by not charging entrance
fees, we chose to present our project on Startnext. If you are
thinking about supporting the project, you can get more information
about the festival on our website. Or maybe you feel a bit
adventurous and want to donate spontaneously?
...how did it come to be that we, a loose association of people, started to think about organising an art festival in Berlin? Well yeah, it all began on one night at a café in Friedrichshain. An ordinary conversation about everyday life led to the shared understanding, that it's not bearable anymore. All this hustling. The compulsion. The restlessness.
"STEP BY STEP, IT GOES ON AND ON, FOR YOU AND FOR ME, FOR YOU AND FOR ME. THIS IS YOUR PATH, AND I'LL WALK WITH YOU A LITTLE PART OF THE WAY. IN AND OUT ALL THE TIME, AND THEY SAY, IT'S SO NICE, GO MAKE SOMETHING OF IT! BUT WHAT TO MAKE OF THIS? WHEN CONSCIOUSNESS IS 100% SUSPENDED, CEREBRAL TRANSFERS SEEM TO BE WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD. BUT TODAY I ASK, WHAT'S THE POINT AND WHAT'S THE OBJECTIVE. MAYBE JUST GOING AWAY FROM HERE AND DOING IT FAST. DOING IT TO BE ABLE TO MAKE IT AND TO BUILD A GOOD LIFE, AS GOOD AS POSSIBLE. SOMEWHERE, WHERE THAT'S AN OPTION AND WHERE ONE CAN GET RID OF ALL THESE HUMAN MACHINES. JUST DOING IT TO BE ABLE TO MAKE IT AND TO BUILD A GOOD LIFE, AS GOOD AS POSSIBLE. EVEN IF IT MEANS TAKING FLIGHT (AUCH WENN ES FLUCHT BEDEUTET), IT'S STILL POSSIBLE THAT IT'S RIGHT. LIVING LIFE!? HOW DOES THAT WORK ANYWAY? THE POINT IS TO LIVE IT. (YAGE)
And from that arose the idea to begin an art festival, which views flight as a necessary action. The subsequent text is the result of our thoughts. It's an interpretation, which is meant to serve the artists and speakers as an inspiration for creating their contributions to the festival in November.
„ACCELERATED IRRELEVANCE AS AN EXPRESSION OF A COMPULSIVE SOCIETY. UNDER THE COMPULSION OF USABILITY AND SPELLBOUND BY INDIVIDUALITY. QUANTITY PULLS QUALITY TO THE GROUND AND SCREAMS FOR ORIGINALITY AND INNOVATION. AS A RESULT THERE IS A VARIATION OF VERSIONS AND THE EXPERIENCE OF A RETROPROJECTION. JOY IS IN HIDING. BEAUTY HAS CEASED TO BE AN END IN ITSELF. AND NARCISSISM BLOSSOMS IN MOLDY COLORS. A SELF-DECEPTION WHICH MAKES US FORGET THAT OUR APPEARANCE IN THIS LIFE IS JUST A TRAGIC COMEDY. TAKING FLIGHT AS A NECESSITY AND THE PLEASURE OF A HOPELESS ESCAPE. JUST FOR ONE NIGHT. FOR ONE NIGHT, WE WANT TO NIBBLE ON THE BEAUTY OF THINGS AND WE WANT TO EAT OUR FILL OF FEELING UNCONSTRAINED.“
Because the German word "Flucht" has multiple meanings – including taking refuge – we want to point out, that the idea of our festival is not related to the current situation of refugees in Europe. When we speak about taking flight or escaping, we always mean escaping society's conditions, which is associated with critical opposition as well as the feeling of being at the mercy of circumstances. So although it might be possible to use the same terminology to describe the situation of the refugees, we want to make clear, that "Flucht" has many different forms and dimensions, which are not interchangeable and have to be approached separately, taking different levels of quality and necessity into account.
In addition, we want to mention that our festival will not be a space for acts and expressions of racism, sexism, antisemitism, antiziganism or nationalism.
What is the project goal and who is the project for?
Our goals are...
... to bring a non-commercial art festival to Berlin that is
dedicated to current developments and societal conditions in
… to originate an art festival, which tries to advance a critical awareness for social, cultural and political challenges
… to offer young and mostly unknown artists from Europe (Germany, Spain, Italy) a platform in Berlin's art community and the possibility to develop a sustainable, intercultural and international network
…to cultivate cultural and social education with help from artistic works and theoretical lectures
…to hold an art festival without entry costs that is accessible to all
…to execute a project that follows the “Do-It-Together” principle and is not-for-profit
The target groups of the festival are both local and international guests who are interested in a non-commercial, not-for-profit art festival, that on one hand gives young, unknown, international artists the possibility to make an exhibit in Berlin and on the other hand deals with the current social context in Europe and its critical moments (social, political and cultural challenges). Our festival will not be a space for acts and expressions of racism, sexism, antisemitism, antiziganism or nationalism, and we do not wish to attract people who harbor these views.
Why would you support this project?
An art festival, that you and others can attend free of charge, one of the gifts on our list as a reward and our gratitude for acknowledging our commitment and for helping us to make our idea a reality.
How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?
With your support you will help to finance things like travel expenses (e.g., for our Spanish artists), rent for the venue and material costs and rental fees. You will help to ensure that we are able to realize an idea that is dear to our hearts. With your support, we can go on planning the festival with fewer worries and more sleep. ;)
Who are the people behind the project?
We are a team of volunteer enthusiasts trying to organize a three-day art festival in the spirit of the "Do-It-Together" principle. We have already put a lot of work into this project, and we would be over the moon if our little dream of holding our own festival came true this year.
