Dear Supporters, Friends, Philosophers & Readers,This is the crowdfunding portal for our feature-length documentary “à propos: philosophy” that follows the two German participants to the 2013 IPO in Denmark, documents the competition and is composed of many in-depth interviews with participating students and teachers. Even though our minimal crowdfunding goal has already been reached, the film's production costs are multiple times higher and we are still very much in need of your support. So what do you support when you support “à propos: philosophy”? You support a young film team that dares to make its first feature-length film after several shorts and a perennial education as filmmakers. A team that has hurled itself into the film's creation without waiting for the approval of a TV-station or the slow machinery that is German film funding. In preliminary talks, producers have guaranteed us that philosophy is an absolutely non-cinematic topic that lacks a “target group”… So what you are supporting is a film that's being produced anyway.That does not care for time slots, target groups, quotes, ratings and profit, but is made because we think it is necessary. First, you support a film that believes in a youthful philosophy:In arguing, trying to convince and persuading the other one through the better argument; the joy of talking and of language. Not in philosophy as mere sophistication, but as an urgency of life: In an opaque society full of over-complicated issues, lies and ideologies that, like clouds of smog, hinder our sight, we desperately need every insight we can get. But philosophy is not only related to a political or societal misery, philosophy is a fundamental pleasure: Isn’t it a vital joy to better understand oneself? To find out why one does something? Or to come closer to the mystery why it is so hard to do what one has recognized as beautiful and right? Philosophy is nothing but a joy of life that wants this life so much, that it wants to get as close to it as possible. Secondly, you support a film that believes in a philosophical youth: I admit that I am very much afraid of the future. Every day that goes by without the collapse of society, I am in a way surprised and thankful. But since I am shooting this documentary, I sense a new pleasure in the future: I want to see what these young, philosophical human beings will become. I am so drunk by their zest for action, their goals and their desire to come closer to life. If they are our future, it is a future I'm happily and curiously looking forward to. And when they are our future, I want to work hard to live up to their vision of a good life. “à propos: philosophy” stands for the aversion to wait for your vision to be approved by bureaucratic film boards, for the joy to look into life’s countenance without blinking and for the belief in the future. Liebe Unterstützer, Interessierte und Freunde, Auch dank Eurer Unterstützung konnten wir in der letzten Woche nicht nur Neal in Bad Honnef besuchen, wir waren auch beim großen Finale unserer Drehs: Auf der Internationalen Philosophie Olympiade in Odense. Dort haben wir auf Schüler und Philosophie-Lehrer aus über 40 Länder getroffen und ihnen den Bauch mit Fragen durchlöchert: Was war eure erste Begegnung mit der Philosophie? Wie hat sie euch begeistert? Was ist Philosophie überhaupt für euch – und wie schlägt sie sich in eurem alltäglichen Verhalten nieder?Wir haben Neal und Jonathan bei vielen Diskussionen und interkulturellen Begegnungen begleitet und anschließend, so viel sei verraten, mit ihnen nach der Preisverleihung ein bisschen gefeiert.Auch wenn wir uns weiterhin um Finanzierung bemühen müssen, geht es nun in den Schnitt. (Gestern Nacht konnte ich nicht schlafen und habe stundenlang den Film vor meinem inneren Auge ablaufen sehen: das muss jetzt in kleinsten Schritten heraus aus der Imagination und hinein in die Filmdateien.)Wir sind inspiriert und glücklich und freuen uns, dass das Leben so ist, wie es ist.Bald mehr von uns,Sebastian Köthe> Fotos aus Odense findet ihr in unserem Projektblog

Das hilft uns nicht nur den Film überhaupt herzustellen, sondern gibt uns auch Energie und Kraft im Prozess des Drehens und Schneidens. Es ist ein so schönes Gefühl, dass die eigenen Träume und Visionen von einer so großen Gemeinde von Freunden, Bekannten, Unterstützern und neu gewonnenen Freunden liebevoll und tatkräftig begleitet werden. Da, wie ihr wohl wisst, die Produktionskosten des Filmes nicht eintausend, sondern, trotz aller möglichen Sparmaßnahmen, einige tausend Euro betragen, ist es für uns essentiell, dass wir den Spendenaufruf weiterhin aufrecht erhalten und weiter auf eure Unterstützung hoffen, auch wenn wir schon jetzt von der Resonanz überwältigt sind.
