What happens when we confront isolation with our stories and take away its destructive powers? To explore this idea film talent from all over Europe came together in Hamburg to shoot a short movie. As writer-director I financed this matter of the heart myself up until now, and my sponsors and cooperation partners continue to ensure the production’s high standard. But due to the pandemic I no longer have the money to put SHADOW PLAYERS through post-production and finish the short movie.
SHADOW PLAYERS is an English-language fantasy short that with an inkling of hope plays on our present isolation: Trapped in her world a young woman (Alan Rickman’s mentee Amy Molloy) tells her lover (musical shooting star Ruben Van keer) about the beginning of his next story, in which he can travel before literally breaking apart. The problem is that he wants to stay.
What is the project goal and who is the project for?
SHADOW PLAYERS is about a strong woman and a loving man, told from the uncommon perspective of a European genre woman filmmaker. I am making this movie for all who believe in the power of stories. And I propose to present the short movie at festivals in 2021 with a subsequent online distribution, both of which address the European and international genre- and Arthouse audience.
Why would you support this project?
As a filmmaker it is important for me to bring together European talent in front of and behind the camera. With this conviction at heart the short develops momentum beyond its unconventional love story. In times of isolation and social distancing SHADOW PLAYERS casts a hopeful glance at this new situation. If we do get to finish the movie, I sure look forward to sharing it with you, the audience.
How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?
The money will be put towards the picture edit and post-production coordination. Studio Hamburg Postproduction provide editor Heike Gnida with a remote editing suite during the summer of 2020. All post-production steps are coordinated centrally, so that the short can be finished right up to the Digital Cinema Package. In addition to this, we set up access to the video collaboration platform frame.io, to collaborate through, with all post departments.
Who are the people behind the project?
Mel Piper (writer and director, Hamburg), Amy Molloy (actress, London), Ruben Van keer (actor, Antwerp), Bella Halben (director of photography, Hamburg), Heike Gnida (editor, Berlin), Daniela Herzberg (production designer, Hamburg), Owain Llwyd (composer, Wales), Volker Zeigermann (sound design, Hamburg), Dennis Kleyn (vfx supervisor, Planet X, Amsterdam), Stijn Windig (concept artist, Amsterdam) and many more!
