Worum geht es in dem Projekt?

The Project itself

In between Rags and Riches,

“A cinematic documentary about the unseen”

Our decision to title the project “In between rags and riches” resulted from the idea to show all different aspects of life in Namibia rather than to focus just on the top or low end of society.

not only focus on the top or low end of society but to show all different aspects of life in Namibia

In 2014 we went to Namibia with the plan to portrait the obvious, we wanted to explore the wildlife and breath taking landscapes but things changed as soon as we lost all of our equipment in a burglary within the first hours of our arrival.

With no opportunity to persuade our original plans we were forced to deal with endless police reports, some more or less serious investigations and a lot of very grateful individuals that helped us along our way.

After experiencing a very wide range of emotions in such a short time we were startled by the differences in how social classes interact with each other and the different circumstances they are forced to live in.

Due to what we experienced last year we completely changed the way we will portrait the country.

We will rather emphasise todays culture that turns Namibia into the manifold country it is than showcase the vastly explored landscapes and wildlife.

We will be working in its capital Windhoek and other locations varying from small cities to villages and lodges in deserted areas.

The central figures of our narration will each be a representation of a different stratum of society.

We want to use our documentary to raise awareness on how different the standards of life in this world and even one certain area can be.

Our goal is to portrait this complex country as detailed as possible and help the ones that need support when it comes to the necessities of life. The more money we will be able to raise the more we will be able to contribute to people in need.

To give you a complete insight on society in Namibia we will portrait individuals from every part of the society.

A good example for a person that needs medical support is lena, a maid that has been working in the same family for 30 years and has retired by now. Due to having really bad pain in her knees it is nearly impossible for her to walk while her low income simply doesn’t allow her to visit a doctor that could help her.

This is where the idea of our project will step in. The more money we will raise the more we can contribute to the life’s of the people we portrait.

One more example for a not very privileged part of society we can already talk about is a man called Eliakim. He lives in a small sheet metal hut with his family. Every evening he leaves his part of town, leaving his wife and children behind to protect the houses of the richer part of society from burglaries and other crimes.

A more wealthy part of society will be represented by Martin, Madeleine and Bella, a young family living on a plot just outside of Windhoek. One of their biggest worries is the amount of burglaries taking part in all parts of Namibia. This is a result of the huge differences in the income of people belonging to different parts of society.

Due to the unpredictable nature of our destination we decided to not be to certain about what and who we are going to film but rather go with the opportunities that will open up during our stay in Namibia.

Our cinematic documentary will cover as much as possible of the country and with your help we will be able to help as many people as possible along our project.

The goal we set ourselves is to show that there is more to the country than just the stereotypes you normally hear about.

We will be playing with the unknown and keep the audience connected to the protagonists on a very emotional level.

Was sind die Ziele und wer ist die Zielgruppe?

The goal we set ourselves is to show that there is more to the country than just the stereotypes you normally hear about.
We will be playing with the unknown and keep the audience connected to the protagonists on a very emotional level.
Our project shall also function as an eye opener to people that live in rather luxurious circumstances but don’t appreciate them anymore because they take small things like clean
water, a secure housing and the opportunity to work a well paid job for granted.

Warum sollte jemand dieses Projekt unterstützen?

If you support our project you are directly going to see what your money is going to be spend on and you will see how you can improve people´s life.

Was passiert mit dem Geld bei erfolgreicher Finanzierung?

The money you contribute will be used to support the people we portrait by e.g. paying for medical help, school supplies and other necessities.
The collected money will also be used to partly cover e.g. transportation, taxes and fees and housing costs during our stay in Namibia.

Wer steht hinter dem Projekt?

We are Judith Lehner and Michel Lorenzen, two young filmmakers from southern Germany.
We have been working together on different projects for about two years now, varying from music videos to short documentaries and fashion films.
Right now we are working on our biggest project so far taking place in Namibia.
Initially we had the idea to portrait the beauty and struggles people have to deal with in their daily lives here in Namibia. Soon we realised that we could easily improve the lives of certain individuals and groups by paying for e.g. medical support or school supplies.

The more money you contribute the more people we will be able to help!

Judiths focus lies upon capturing and showing the preciousness that can be found within small moments that represent certain parts of society while I am in charge of connecting to the people and projects we portrait and the conceptual part.
During the last year we gathered a lot of experience for the social work that is linked to our project while working with young refugees.
