Our tenth album is dedicated to Nadia Boulanger as a teacher and portrays six of her students who couldn't be more different: Jean Françaix, Aaron Copland, Philip Glass, Leonard Bernstein, Quincy Jones and Astor Piazzolla. They are among the countless pupils whom she influenced strongly and accompanied on their way of finding their own voice. Due to our loss of income in the past months we need your support to make this album a success!
For our tenth CD, which will be released on our 15th trio birthday in early 2021, we have undertaken a heart project: we would like to honor Nadia Boulanger by portraying her on a CD as a highly influential teacher - with works by her students. The styles could hardly be more diverse: in addition to the classicist, cheerful trio by Jean Françaix, there is the intense jewish Vitebsk by Aaron Copland, the minimal music by Philip Glass is played alongside the touching violin melody from The Color Purple by Quincy Jones, Leonard Bernstein's Westside Story and the Tango nuevo by Astor Piazzolla complete the program.
The preparation of the CD was a lot of fun for us - discovering the musical language of Quincy Jones, Leonard Bernstein and Astor Piazzolla was exciting and fulfilling for us and we discovered new musical worlds for us. While all of our concerts were canceled without exception from mid-March to the end of August, we were very happy to stick to our plans to record at the Jesus Christus Kirche in Berlin in early June. We had four wonderful recording days there - it was so wonderful to finally be able to play music together again after a two-month break!
The cut is now almost complete. On July 8th and 9th we will spend two days in Tangoloft in Berlin to produce the music videos for the album with director Andreas Morell. Nikolaj Lund joins us from Copenhagen for the cover shooting.
What is the project goal and who is the project for?
Anyone who knows us better knows that we don't do things by halves. Our goal is to complete the new album perfectly and to promote it with great photos and videos in a way that many people will notice it. The CD helps us to remain visible even during the corona crisis.
There is something for everyone on this CD - we want to show our versatility and at the same time bring to attention Nadia Boulanger's strong influence on various styles of composition during the 20th century.
The album is suitable for everybody who loves music and wants to go on a journey of discovery!
Why would you support this project?
Our CD will be released by Berlin Classics and will be available worldwide. But probably not everyone knows: even with such a production there is quite a sum which we artists have to contribute ourselves.
We make our living from playing concerts and under normal circumstances would have invested part of our income of the past months into our new CD. Due to Corona however we have lost all our opportunities to earn money since mid-March. The concert cancellations already extend into the next year and we don't know how to compensate for the loss of income in recent months. So like most freelancing artists, we're practically unemployed right now. Still our love for what we do is strong, we will keep on going and hope for better times!
In the meantime we would very much appreciate your support to finance this beautiful project!
How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?
We use your money for
- the extra hours that our wonderful sound engineer Nora Brandenburg has invested so that the CD can be completed according to our wishes - the photo shooting with star photographer Nikolaj Lund from Copenhagen - the trailer that Andreas Morell will produce which his amazing team - the make-up artist for the photo and video shoots - the two-day rent of Tangoloft Berlin - which also urgently needs support, since no events could take place there since March
The Boulanger Trio is not getting paid for the production!
