We are making a CD of cello sonatas by Giuseppe Dall'Abaco. Unheard until now, these works will serve to further illuminate our understanding of the tradition of virtuoso cello playing in the 18th Century.

What is this project all about?

Through this project we hope to further the understanding of the cello music of Giuseppe Dall’Abaco, one of the finest solo cellists of his generation. His legacy of 35 Sonatas, sadly never published in his lifetime, embody virtuoso cello playing of a particular Galant style. We will be making the first recording of five of these sonatas, and we are excited to share their virtuosity and unique sound.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

Our goal is a complete CD production, which will be of interest not only to the classical music crowd, but as well to hardcore cello nerds—who will be particularly thrilled by the cello duos of Dall’Abaco!

Why would you support this project?

The making of this CD will serve to further our understanding of the history of cello sonatas in the Galant style. Until now only a small fraction of Dall’Abaco's sonatas have been released on CD—the sonatas that we are recording have not yet appeared on CD. Dall’Abaco was himself an exceptional cellist, which is why we are so excited to share his cello music with the world.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

Your support finances the costs of our audio engineer, our musicians, as well as the rental of a world-class recording venue in Frankfurt am Main. Also included in our costs is the harpsichord rental and transport, as well as our travel costs for the rehearsal period of the project.

Who are the people behind the project?

For this project I will be joined by Shin Hwang on the harpsichord, and Candela Gomez-Bonet on cello. As part of our preparation we have received feedback from professors at the Frankfurt Hochschule für Musik. Our recording engineer will be Jean-Daniel Noir, who works freelance with various record labels. We have chosen the Festeburgkirche in Frankfurt as our recording location, and are happy to have use of a harpsichord built by Christian Fuchs in his workshop in Frankfurt Höchst.
