I am Jennifer Hymer, pianist and artistic director of the Hamburg-based Non Piano / Toy Piano ensemble. I grew up in Hawaii and received degrees of music at UC Berkeley and Mills College. Next to the piano, I also play the toy piano, the kalimba and the melodica. My teachers have included Julie Steinber, James Avery, Deno Gianopoulos and Bernhard Wambach.
As I am interested in expanding the sonic possibilities of the piano, I have specialised in playing with live electronics and extended techniques. Numerous pieces have been dedicated to her and her ensemble by notable composers such as Maria de Alvear, Chris Brown, Sidney Corbett, Frank Corcoran, Alvin Curran, Anthony De Ritis. Dror Feiler, Karlheinz Essl, Reinhard Flender, Peter Gahn, Annie Gosfield, Peter Hamel, Matthias Kaul, Peter Köszeghy, Hanna Kulenty, Mauro Lanza, Sascha Lino Lemke, Lukas Ligeti, Annea Lockwood, Helmut Oehring, Ruta Paidere, Steven Tanoto, Oliver Schneller, Manfred Stahnke & Steffen Wolf.
My piano projects include the multimedia project Handscapes (for piano, electronics and video) and my piano, toy piano, kalimba and gadgets project, both of which received contributions by renowned composers, as well as my project Kalimba! for which I commissioned new pieces for solo kalimba. My solo CD Ceci n’est pas un Piano was released under Ambitus Musikproduktion.
