StartHub supports young people across East Africa to start their own business. In collaboration with universities and various support agents in the entrepreneurship ecosystem, we act as multiplicators and let our students to build perspectives for themselves, and for other people too.
Uganda's population is very young. 75% of Ugandans are below 30 years and looking for decent employment. But there are only around 90.000 jobs available for 400.000 youths entering the job market every year. Often there is one solution for employment left: starting a business.
The total entrepreneurial activity in Uganda is as high as in no other country, but the failure rates are also very high. Starting a successful business is not easy after all.
There is a lack of early-stage and practical entrepreneurship programs, strong networks and access to financing for startups.
StartHub Africa is a non-profit NGO with the vision of helping young people to start sustainable businesses, creating employment for themselves and others. How do we do this?
Step 1 Together with 7 Ugandan universities we offer the “StartHub Academy” since 2017 – a practical entrepreneurship program, in which students develop their ideas and start a business in only one semester. We train facilitators at those universities who guide students to start a business with our curriculum.
Step 2 After one semester, we host a pitch event where young founders present their businesses to the public and build valuable networks. We invite successful founders, potential customers, investors and supporters.
Step 3 To prevent failure where possible, we offer further support to our startups within the “StartHub Catalyzer”. We link startups with experienced Ugandan entrepreneurs who offer their advice as guiding mentors. On top of that, we provide the platform for local startups to find investors to take the next steps.
Our experience of last year has shown: this approach is working! 34 startups are up and running, providing 31 jobs aside those for co-founders. We want to replicate this success and support thousands of young people with your help.
How are we special? We are multiplicators.
One single training does not solve big problems. Therefore, we train local trainers at existing institutions and provide them with a toolbox consisting of all necessary materials and tools for training. This enables them to deliver high quality workshops with no additional cost and time to potentially reach thousands of young people.
With this we have the chance to broaden our impact by first accessing institutions in the rural areas of Uganda, as well as other East African countries.
What is the project goal and who is the project for?
We want to help young talents on the African continent to fulfill their potential and leverage their creativity, to start successful businesses that last and flourish. We want to help them turn one-man shows into medium-sized companies that provide income and employment opportunities for many more people.
This helps to build a base for a decent human life, a peaceful societal life together and give many young people the chance to build their career and societies in the way they envision them.
Up to now, we mainly address university students, as their level of education and expertise shows the highest potential to start businesses that last and grow. Through collaborations with other institutions such as vocational schools or refugee camps, we will start opening up our programs to a much broader audience in 2019.
Why would you support this project?
Founding your own business is the embodiment of self-realisation. It is a great force to shape your own life doing what you love and impact others and society with your vision.
You can be part of making this happen through little effort and being part oft he supportive crowd. You can help provide young people in East Africa with the tools to achieve their goals and shape their societies, to build perspectives for themselves and for others and build African solutions for Africa. You can help entrepreneurs with potential to become successful.
We don’t give fish, we teach how to fish and at the same time we are changing the whole fishing industry. We build local structures and work different than the common development program. Every activity and Euro is spent on the ground, Ugandans and the international team have their equal votes shaping StartHub based on honest eye-level partnerships.
We build sustainable structures to become independent from donations and build lasting change. This is our take for real collaboration with everyone winning in the end.
How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?
With 12.000 Euro, until 2019 we are able to
• train at least 400 students to become entrepreneurs • train at least 20 more facilitators to become StartHub trainers • support at least 50 new startups through mentoring, access to financing and networks • professionalize our program and establish lasting structures, so that StartHub Africa can support young people independently of external financiers from 2020 onwards
Your support therefore does not only help us now for once, but future entrepreneurs will benefit from the structures you help to build.
With 30.000 Euro we can also establish our successful concept in the neighboring country Rwanda. This means
• Building partnerships in Rwanda • Building a local team • Training Rwandan facilitators • Implementing the Acaemy and supporting its operation
