What is this project all about?
GERMAN ANGST is a mystery-horror feature film directed by JÖRG BUTTGEREIT, ANDREAS MARSCHALL and MICHAL KOSAKOWSKI. A German independent anthology that connects three urban nightmare stories in today's Berlin with the forgotten horror tradition of the 1920s.
The first episode, Jörg Buttgereit's FINAL GIRL, tells the story of a young girl who lives alone with her guinea pig in a rundown apartment in Berlin. But is she really alone? In the bedroom lies a man, bound and gagged...
In the episode ALRAUNE by Andreas Marschall, a young man stumbles upon a secret sex club in Berlin's nightlife that promises the ultimate sexual frontier experience by using a drug made from the roots of the legendary Mandragora plant. But the ecstatic experiences have horrific side effects...
MAKE A WISH by Michal Kosakowski tells how Kasia and Jacek, a deaf-mute couple of Polish origin fall into the hands of a sadistic hooligan gang. Seemingly helpless, Kasia has an amulet that had already changed the course of history during World War II. Now, something magical happens that turns the situation on its head but who will be the victims…?
GERMAN ANGST is about love, sex and death in 21st century Germany.
What is the project goal and who is the project for?
The return of director Jörg Buttgereit, after a twenty-year absence from filmmaking is of significant interest to the film fans. Andreas Marschall, who started a career as a cover artist and film director, holds us hostage in a dark underworld embossed by lust, sex and the psyche. Michal Kosakowski confronts us with violence in all levels of society today, and throws the viewer’s preconceptions back on themselves.
GERMAN ANGST invites you on a transgressive journey to the horizons of the genre film. We turn to those who believe that German film culture should not only consist of shallow problem dramas and comedies. We want to make the movie that our fans have long been waiting for.
All three directors have won international fans with very diverse films Nekromantik, Der Todesking, Tears of Kali, Masks and Zero Killed and invite you now on their trip into GERMAN ANGST.
GERMAN ANGST - is independently-produced suspense, shock and the fascination of the dark.
GERMAN ANGST - continues the tradition of German Expressionist horror film (The Golem, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari or Nosferatu) of the 1920s into its own fresh interpretation of the genre.
GERMAN ANGST - is the German answer to episode films like "The Theatre Bizarre" with the signature of three idiosyncratic directors.
Why would you support this project?
Horror films are excluded from official German film subsidies, therefore they must be financed privately.
We are three German filmmakers who share the love for genre films. We work together on the development and production of the 3 episodes through a constant exchange of ideas and opinions. Three distinctly different styles unite in GERMAN ANGST: Jörg Buttgereit's morbid view of everyday life, Marschall's leap into the abyss of dark eroticism and Kosakowski's fusion of politics and horror come together in a dark composition, exploring each other, synergies are used in the shooting process and a disturbing picture of the present emerges.
The mainstream envies the horror film scene for its worldwide network of sworn enthusiasts and fans. We use crowd-funding to get in touch with you. We need your enthusiasm! Your support makes our extreme visions come to life.
How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?
We’ll make the movie! The money will be used to cover the costs of production such as rent of equipment, location costs, costumes, make-up and special effects. As an independent production, we do not have the resources of a state-funded film production, but consider it fair to pay for crew and actors within our means.
Who are the people behind the project?
DIRECTOR/WRITER JÖRG BUTTGEREIT
is the director and author of art-house-horror-movies (Nekromantik, Der Todesking, Nekromantik 2 – Return of the Loving Dead, Schramm – Into the Mind of a Serial Killer), TV documentaries (Monsterland, Into the Night with Asia Argento and Joe Coleman), stage plays (Captain Berlin versus Hitler, Gabba Gabba Hey! - The Ramones musical, Kannibale und Liebe, Green Frankenstein + Sexmonster!) and radio dramas (Die Bestie von Fukushima, Sexy Sushi, Frankenstein in Hiroshima). He also works as a film journalist for books and magazines. Jörg Buttgereit is regarded as the most influential pioneer of a genuine German style in the horror genre.
DIRECTOR/WRITER ANDREAS MARSCHALL
made his debut as writer-director with the horror thriller Tears of Kali in 2004, which was one of the most successful genre films since the late sixties. It won several festival awards including the Méliès d'Argent of the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation.
His second film Masks, which premiered at the Hofer Filmtage 2011, was critically acclaimed and became a huge festival success (more than 30 festival screenings in one year) and won five jury and two audience awards. At the end of 2012 it entered many polls and was voted The Best German Film in the Deadline magazine readers' poll and one of the ten best horror films of 2012 by aintitcool.com, USA.
Marschall has also shot about a hundred music videos for the bands Kreator, Guano Apes, Tunderhead, Fair Warning etc. He is also a well-known illustrator and artist of film and record artwork. Additionally, he works as a screenwriter and an editor for TV and feature films (As Far as My Feet Will Carry Me).
DIRECTOR/PRODUCER MICHAL KOSAKOWSKI (KOSAKOWSKI FILMS)
Kosakowski's controversial first feature film Zero Killed (2011), a hybrid of feature film and documentary on murder fantasies, has been shown in more than 40 film festivals worldwide and has won numerous awards (Best Film – Chicago Underground Film Festival, Horrible Imaginings Film Festival of San Diego, South Texas Underground Film Festival, Thriller! Chiller! Film Festival).
Kosakowski has over 20 years' experience in film-making. He has produced and directed numerous short and experimental films, documentaries and video installations, such as the critically acclaimed Just Like the Movies (2006) and Fortynine (2007).
Currently he is working on several projects including Horror, his new feature film, and Dark Tourism, a feature documentary about a Polish WWII historical reenactment group.
WRITER GORAN MIMICA
He has published numerous short stories, literary reviews, a book of short stories Kratka Motka za Neposlusne (Serkl, Novi Sad, 2000) and two novels Chorografia (Stylos, Novi Sad, 2002) and Svinado (Futura, Novi Sad, 2004). He has collaborated with Michal Kosakowski for more than ten years on numerous projects both as actor and scriptwriter.

Nico Bruinsma is an experienced producer and film distributor who has established a career releasing films through his Los Angeles-based company Cult Epics. His company has released over 100 films in the past 12 years in the USA through Ryko/ADA (Warner Brothers) and is now signed for distribution in the US & Canada with Entertainment One. Originally formed in Europe twenty years ago, some of the company’s early releases include titles such as Exotic Dances of Betty Page, Tokyo Decadence, and Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer, which were released theatrically and on video through Polygram (Universal). Cult Epics represents some of the most legendary cult directors from all over the world including: Fernando Arrabal, Walerian Borowczyk, Rene Daalder, Abel Ferrara, Tinto Brass and Radley Metzger, among others. Some of these classics have been released in arthouse cinemas and were screened at the American Cinematheque, the Lincoln Center Film Society and other art film institutes.
