What is this project all about?

From January until June we drive from Germany to South Africa with our Mitsubishi L300 to meet with young African entrepreneurs and people with ideas in the countries on our way.

We are interested in the way people are shaping their own future and the future of their country by means of entrepreneurial thinking. With photo, video and sound equipment we document our impressions and experiences during our travel, because we want you to accompany us!

Furthermore the project is part of our Master’s thesis at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. For the Institute of Product Development as well as the Institute for Entrepreneurship, Technology Management and Innovation we analyze the environment of African entrepreneurs based on the findings of this journey.

Of course we are happy about questions, comments or suggestions on our blog:

For everyone interested in more details, here you find a list of all the countries we cross:

Morocco, Mauritania, Sénégal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Bénin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Congo, D.R. Congo, Angola, Namibia and South Africa.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

When it comes to entrepreneurship most of the people automatically think about established places like Silicon Vally. The fact that in other parts of the world, like Africa, young people pursue their own ideas as well is overseen by many.

It is our goal to show Africa from a different perspective. A perspective which so far only gained few or even no attention. By providing photo, video and text, we are eager to enable everyone to participate in our experiences on the way.

Why would you support this project?

By setting the focus on the upcoming African continent we address a highly relevant issue. As Europeans we usually look at the big western companies trying to set foot on the African market.

We on the contrary exclusively deal with local founders: Young Africans who start a business out of their own ideas. Being students and having more or less the same age as our contacts we are able to get really close to the people.

Support our project to discover the Africa of the next generation together with us!

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

Despite driving as economic as possible, crossing Africa comes along with a high fuel consumption due to long distances and rough roads. In addition, the sum of visa fees poses a financial challenge for us as students, since we travel up to 20 countries.

Together with you we want our venture not to fail because of borders or an empty tank. Let’s make it possible to look for more interesting people and ideas in all the countries ahead of us!

Who are the people behind the project?

We are Max Ittermann, Martin Kummann and Philipp Hoening, graduate students of mechanical engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Since more than a year we are engaged in the entrepreneurial student group PionierGarage. There we try to motivate students to start their own company. During this activity we already had the opportunity to meet with entrepreneurs from established places like the Silicon Valley or Tel Aviv.

Due to personal interest for Africa as well as the fact that Philipp already absolved an internship in Ghana, we came up with the idea to drive from Germany to South Africa by car. Combined with our passion for entrepreneurship this travel eventually became a project – Ideas made in Africa.
