Wo manche die antiken Stätten fotografierten, suchten andere die Zeichen einer neuen Zeit. Zwischen Aleppo und Alexandria griffen deutsche Reisende im 20. Jahrhundert oft und gerne zur Kamera. Ihre Aufnahmen speichern Erinnerungen, wecken Sehnsüchte und dokumentieren eine Kulturlandschaft an der Schwelle zur Moderne. Für das Buch "Das gelobte Land der Moderne" (Jovis-Verlag) wurden 50.000 Reisebilder aus 100 Jahren gesichtet – und die 170 schönsten ausgewählt.
