Eurydice is an adaptation of the myth of Orpheus in the underworld - told from the other perspective, through the eyes of Eurydice, the play reflects on life, loss, and the power of remembrance. A significant role in the story is played by water: Lethe, the river of forgetfulness. Our goal is to bring that river to the stage.

What is this project all about?

The English Theatre Leipzig turns to Greek mythology in its newest production and presents Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice from the year 2003, a retelling of the myth of Orpheus in the underworld.

Eurydice and Orpheus celebrate their wedding, when Eurydice dies and finds herself in the underwold. Because she was dipped into the river of forgetfulness, Lethe, she has lost all her memories. She meets her father - a character newly created by Sarah Ruhl - who managed to save his memory and now wants to refresh hers. Three stones - the classic chorus - want to prevent this.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

Our goal is to build a mystical and impressive set. Part of this is the river of forgetfulness. We plan to build a structure that'll allow us to have running water and thus a representation of the river on stage, in the shape of a well.

So we call upon all theatre lovers, patrons of the arts, Anglophiles, and supporters of English Theatre Leipzig and Neues Schauspiel Leipzig to help us create something truly special!

Why would you support this project?

It is our mission to bring quality English-language theatre to Leipzig and Leipzig into the theatre, so our shows are produced and put on entirely by volunteers ranging from professionals to first-timers.

By supporting us, you're enabling us to continue on this path, help realize the production of what we are sure will be an amazing show, and by extension also support our home theatre, Neues Schauspiel Leipzig, which has been a reliable partner of ETL since the very beginning.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

The collected donations will go toward the production of Eurydice, first and foremost the construction of the well, as well as other scene elements, to put together an impressive and mystical set. A small portion will also be allocated for production and shipping of the perks.

The secondary goal would enable us to cover costume costs, as well as part of the printing costs for posters and programmes.

Who are the people behind the project?

English Theatre Leipzig was founded by a group of theatre enthusiasts and professionals in 2013. After some fits and starts, we’ve settled into a rhythm of three productions per year, all hosted by our wonderful home theatre, Neues Schauspiel Leipzig. We have finally managed to wade through all the paperwork and are now registered as an official non-profit association (e.V.) dedicated to the furtherance of English theatre appreciation in Leipzig.

In addition to presenting our three productions a year (to which you are all heartily welcome) we are looking forward to spreading our love of treading the boards to more people in our beautiful city. We will be doing this through theatre-based workshops and other community outreach programs. Although English naturally tends to be our working language, we welcome all individuals regardless of their background.

If you would like to be a part of this exciting future, then please consider becoming a member, either as an active part of our theatre production community or as a supporting member of the association, which will give you an inside track on all upcoming events. You will find an application form on our website.
