What is this project all about?

The second issue of manege für architektur "automations" explains and presents the rapidly developing digital technologies and investigates their relevance for architecture, our built environment and society with a particular focus on the interplay between artistic and artificial intelligence.

Today, it has become increasingly common to collaborate with robots and algorithms. In architecture, design and construction methods based on machine learning processes generate first results and herald a shift from the focus on fabrication towards a deeper integration of thinking and making. In addition, the ubiquity of machine vision and sensing connect not only the machine and the digital with the real world, but also the human with both worlds through virtual and augmented reality.

«automations» contributes to our digital empowerment by presenting diverse perspectives on the creative use of contemporary digital technologies helping us to critically engage with them in order to design and shape a better built environment.

With contributions by Paula Strunden (Soft Bodies, Virtual Fruits, Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna), Cenk Güzelis (University of Innsbruck), Robert Twomey (Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts), Yana Boeva (University of Stuttgart), Gilles Retsin (Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL), Thomas Wortmann (University of Stuttgart), Christian Gänshirt (Politecnico di Milano), Benjamin Dillenburger (ETH Zürich), Michael Hansmeyer, Norman Sieroka (University of Bremen), Matthias Kohler (ETH Zürich), Matias del Campo (Span, Taubman College, University of Michigan), Jonathan Assmus, Simon Thoböll, Andreas Nutz (Philosophisches Atelier, University of Bremen), Zeynep Aksöz & Mark Balzar (OpenFields, die Angewandte, Vienna), Hannes Mayer (manege für architektur), Sean Hanna (Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL).

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

manege für architektur is an independent medium and magazine fully funded through its crowd and readership.

We believe in the importance of connecting the academic discourse with the practice of architecture and consider writing and publishing as architecture. We take great care in identifying relevant, challenging topics, making them accessible to the wider architecture community and public.

Language, translations and graphic design play a vital role in this catalytic process establishing manege as a publication which is rigorous yet playful and dares to be colourful.

manege für architektur addresses architects, scholars and everyone with an interest in architecture and the built environment beyond the current norm and standards.

Why would you support this project?

Digital technologies confront us all. As architects, artists or members of civil society, we are asked to position ourselves to them. Human-made, they call for participation in taming or leveraging their power. How does architecture change in this new condition of human-machine interaction where artificial and artistic intelligence become increasingly inseparable?

The second issue of manege für architektur makes the complex topic accessible. For the specialists amongst us, it extends the discussion to include philosophical reflections and a wealth of surprising perspectives.

manege für architektur is dedicated to a lively, forward-looking yet critical architectural discourse, providing a stage and medium for young voices, sharp minds and leading experts. We see writing as an artistic practice and not as a commodity. That is why we go to great lengths to achieve a perfect product. From the editing process and the proof-reading to the graphic design and physical production. We print pure pantone and hks colours on Lessebo Design Smooth paper and opted for a thread sewn schweizer broschur lay-flat binding to celebrate the graphic design of cyan Berlin.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

14,000 EUR
Our Startlevel covers our costs for the production of the second issue. This includes lithography, printing and binding as well as the graphic design by cyan.

19,000 EUR
Reaching the next level, the cost for translations, copy-editing and proofreading are covered.

24,000 EUR
A crowdfunding campaign does not come for free. The next level covers the cost for our campaign, the website as well as costs for shipping. The coffee in the morning is still on us.

>24,000 EUR
Any additional amount helps us to keep our project alive and to work on the next issue of manege für architektur. We want to keep reaching a global audience and continue to offer all content in English. Thank you for your support, you are a star.

Who are the people behind the project?

The founders and publishers
We are Florian Dreher (*1977), Hannes Mayer (*1981) and Katharina Sommer (*1982), three architects who embrace language and publishing as a means of architecture. Since 2016, manege für architektur reflects our ideal architecture magazine bringing together intellectual discourse with aesthetic ambition.

The second issue of manege für architektur "automations" builds up on the research of Hannes Mayer, who led the chair for architecture and digital fabrication – Gramazio Kohler Research at ETH Zürich as senior researcher between 2016 and 2022.

Our partners

The graphic designers
The graphic design work of cyan Berlin, Daniela Haufe and Detlef Fiedler, defined the visual language of many art and cultural institutions. Their magazine issues of form+zweck have established their reputation for an uncompromising approach to design and their work for the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation is part of the MoMA collection.

The copy-editors and proofreader:
We work with Christina Bösel, who brings in many years of experience at working for leading specialist publishing houses in Switzerland such as Niggli, Benteli and Lars Müller. Christina was supported by her former colleague at Benteli Miriam Waldvogel who runs the small publishing house Saatgut and works as an independent copy-editor. Eagle-eyed proofreader Gian-Philip Andreas from Berlin completed our team.

The printers:
We rely on the expertise and German precision of Druckerei Kettler from Bönen/Westfalen with 75 years of experience in printing high-quality and art books.

The authors:
Paula Strunden (Soft Bodies, Virtual Fruits, Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna), Cenk Güzelis (University of Innsbruck), Robert Twomey (Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts), Yana Boeva (University of Stuttgart), Gilles Retsin (Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL), Thomas Wortmann (University of Stuttgart), Christian Gänshirt (Politecnico di Milano), Benjamin Dillenburger (ETH Zürich), Michael Hansmeyer, Norman Sieroka (University of Bremen), Matthias Kohler (ETH Zürich), Matias del Campo (Span, Taubman College, University of Michigan), Jonathan Assmus, Simon Thoböll, Andreas Nutz (Philosophisches Atelier, University of Bremen), Zeynep Aksöz & Mark Balzar (OpenFields, die Angewandte, Vienna), Hannes Mayer (manege für architektur), Sean Hanna (Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL).

The translators
