ENSynopsis of the documentary film"Driven into the unknown / The survival story of Faye Cukier"Faye Cukier, born in 1922 in Cologne into a Jewish family of Polish origin, who lived as Fanni Cukrowski, the daughter of Jakob and Sophie, is a charming and fascinating lady, full of life, energy and total zest to get things moving.In the film, Faye takes her viewers on a retrospective journey through her troubled past. She tells us of the timebefore the Second World War, starting with the first steps of hatred against the Jews, the escape from Cologne, away from all her trusted friends and acquaintances in her beloved native city, away to a foreign country, whose language she and her family at first could not master.After her father was forced through expropriation to give up the family business, a steel business in Cologne-Muelheim, they had to find their feet in Antwerp (Belgium) and start afresh.16-year-old Faye quickly recognised despite her young age that with her business acumen and ability to learn promptly as well as her talent for languages and communication that she had to keep the family "above water". She soon established herself as a diamond dealer and also gave English lessons, through which this survival artist kept her family from ruin.After an initially positive start in their new surroundings, the Cukiers realised however that their presence was also not welcome here in Belgium and that in the log term they would have to leave the country. After their original resdince permit expired,the three lived illegally and always on the run in constant fear of the Belgian police as well as later from the German occupiers,as it was impossible for them to get an exit visa.As refugees they were often able to find shelter with understandingoreven sometimes unknowing locals, which gave them the possibility of remaining one step ahead of their pursuers. Even when finally their deportation came through and the situation, where they were already sitting in the train, seemed completely hopeless, fate once again lent a helping hand...Faye Cukier´s life motto was from now on not to do what others did, but to be individual, never to give in to fate and to develop a personal opportunity out of every awkward situation.The interplay between tragedy and triumph ran like a red thread through her entire life.IntentionThe happy fact that this nice and unique lady is still among us as an eyewitness provides a unique opportunity for a documentary filming of her unusual story of survival.For this reason, we should make it our task to retain, the knowledge provided by Ms. Cukier, prepared with background information and archive material, and make it durable for future generations in moving images.It is also Faye Cukiers personal concern, that the atrocities committed on Jews should never be forgotten, in the hope that such events never happen again.Our plan includes the artistic combination of photo and image material of the period (1938-1945) with Faye's memories, that we will win through extensive interviews with her.In addition, we will together follow their entire escape route and visit places, landscapes and buildings in Germany and Belgium that can still be found, to relive their memories and visualize the stories.The viewer is thus offered the opportunity to gain an impression of the events of the time.Initially, we intend to establish the eyewitness Faye Cukier, here and now and accompany her in daily life in her hometown of Cologne. NLSYNOPSIS voor de documentaire:"Verdrijving in het onbekende / Het overlevingsverhaal van Faye Cukier" Faye Cukier is in 1922 te Keulen geboren en van Pools/Joodse afkomst. Zij is geboren onder de naam Fanny Cukrowski, dochter van Jacob en Sophie. Vandaag de dag is ze een vriendelijke en fascinerende dame, vol leven, energie en een absolute geestdrift om te motiveren .In de film, gaat Faye samen met de kijker op een retrospectieve reis door haar kleurrijke verleden. Het vertelt ons over de periode voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog, te beginnen met de eerste voortekenen van het antisemitisme. De vlucht van Keulen, weg van al het vertrouwde aldaar, haar vrienden en kennissen in haar geliefde geboorteplaats. De vlucht naar een vreemd land, waar zij en haar familie de taal in eerste instantie niet machtig waren.Nadat haar vader het familiebedrijf, een staalhandel in Keulen-Mülheim, door dwangsmatige onteigening moest opgeven, was het nu in Antwerpen (België) opnieuw beginnen. En een nieuw bestaan op te bouwen. De toen 16-jarige Faye begreep snel, ondanks haar jonge leeftijd, dat zij met haar handelsgeest en -inzicht en tevens haar taal- en communicatievaardigheden, haar familie het hoofd financieel boven water moest houden. Al snel vestigde ze zich als diamant handelaar en gaf tevens ook les in Engels; hiermee redde de “overlevingskunstenares” de familie van de ondergang.Na een aanvankelijk positief begin in hun nieuwe leefomgeving, realiseerden de Cukier’s zich snel dat ze ook niet veilig zouden zijn in België en op de lange duur het land zouden moeten verlaten. Nadat de eerste verblijfsvergunning was verlopen, woonden de drie illegaal in Belgie en waren uit voortdurende angst voor ontdekking altijd op de vlucht voor de Belgische politie en later voor de Duitse bezetters, omdat ze niet in staat waren geweest om een uitreisvergunning te verkrijgen.Als vluchteling, konden ze vaak onderkomst vinden bij begripvolle of anderzijds nietsvermoedende lokale bevolking, die hen in de gelegenheid stelden de achtervolgers altijd een stap vooruit te zijn. Daarnaast zullen wij met haar de complete vluchtroute nagaan. En tevens, mits voorhanden, plaatsen, landschappen en gebouwen bezoeken in Duitsland, België en Frankrijk. Om de herinnering te doen herleven en te visualiseren in het verhaal.Wij willen de kijker een uniek inzicht bieden in deze donkere tijdsperiode met dit tijdsdokument.In het begin van de documentaire willen we Faye Cukier in het Keulen van vandaag introduceren en haar dagelijkse leven aldaar volgen. Vervolgens beginnen we daar onze reis naar het verleden met het aanhalen van belangrijke gebeurtenissen en bezoeken van locaties uit haar jeugd en het optekenen van het sociale leven van de familie Cukier voor de ballingschap in 1938 (11 september 1938).Historische ondersteuning verkrijgen wij van het Nazi Documentatie Centrum in Keulen, en de stadsarchieven van Antwerpen, Brussel, Duinkerken en Hoeselt. Mede met deze ondersteuning willen wij een zo correct mogelijke historische verantwoorde voorstelling geven van de gebeurtenissen.

Juif d'origine polonaise, elle est née sous le nom de Fanny Cukrowski, fille de Jacob et Sophie et aujourd'hui, c'est une dame sympathique et fascinante, pleine de vie et d'énergie et le zeste absolut de faire bouger les choses.Faye emmène le public dans un voyage à travers sont passé mouvementé. Elle nous parle du temps avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, à commencer par les premiers précurseurs de l'antisémitisme.
