mimycri is a non-profit, collaborative integration project, based in Berlin. Together, refugees and other internationals are designing bags and backpacks out of broken rubber boats, which were used by refugees to reach the Greek island Chios. Through working together, strangers become friends and “rubbish” high quality products.
It is about remembering and about starting new: We are an international team consisting of refugees and people who have lived in Berlin for a long time. We design bags, backpacks and accessories out of broken rubber boats. Each product embodies both the story of escape and of a new beginning. mimycri makes history tangible by introducing the material in form of a bag into our society.
It is about changing perspective: at mimycri waste turns into a valuable resource and refugees become friends and colleagues.
It is about it all together: mimycri brings social and economic benefits in a resource-efficient way. In a holistic way, mimycri combines sustainable business, migration, societal change and lifestyle. We want to create a sustainable project in order to make economic remuneration possible for everyone involved in mimycri.
What is the project goal and who is the project for?
Our goal is to encourage changing perspective through a concrete and innovative idea. We want to create awareness for what connects us – together with you!
Why producing bags and backpacks? Working together helps to…
emphasize the similarities
deal with the refugee context
create a new beginning
show that it is possible to do something
Integration and participation matter for you. You are into sustainable design and care about the current topics of our times.
Each mimycri product is unique and carries traces of its time as a boat. Small scratches and stains testify that our material has a special story. You will continue writing this story with using your mimycri product in your daily life.
Why would you support this project?
We believe that more opportunities exist than we often realise. We look for the good in the bad. We envision a world in which we help and support each other, just because we can – and because it feels good. We invite you all to take part!
You support this project because:
you create social and financial opportunities with buying a product
you think that it is important to remember and be aware
you want to wear unique and high quality products which have been produced in a fair and sustainable way
you want to become part of a movement, which believes that is possible for each and every one of us to do something, even though we cannot solve the entire context of why this is actually happening
Join in and contribute to a better “us”!
How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?
With our international team, we have already designed our first prototypes. In order to align the external appearance of our project with is valuable context, we are working together with professional designer, photographers and cameraman. If we reach our funding goal, we can start producing the bags and backpacks together with refugees.
We are putting high emphasize on the quality of our products. Finalising our products, we will constantly improve little details, such as the logo and zippers so that you receive a high-quality product which can accompany you as long as possible. We will ask you for your preferred colour patterns during the realisation phase.
Who are the people behind the project?
We are Abid, Ari, Damla, Hassan, Louise, Nora, Tammy, Vera and Urška. We are a team of architects, fashion designers, innovation consultants, tailors, communication experts and environmental economists from seven different countries. But, above all, we are friends. Some of us since ten years, some since mimycri was created. Some of us are living in Berlin only since some months, others already since many years.
Cooperation and continuous exchange is central for our work and we realised that our ideas always improve once we develop them together. Professionalism, creativity and fun are the pillars of our work.
