What is this project all about?

“We heard hunters' dogs barking on the maramig-trail to the rainforest station and smelt gas, coffee and eucalyptus from hunters' campfires along the dry riverbed. We also saw hornbill feathers on the riverbed where it had been plucked and eaten. So the hunting situation is pretty bad!! Hopefully the rangers are able to continue going out during this crisis, because I think even more people are hunting than usual!”
- Holly M. was conducting a study in the Rainforest of Panay

The Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park located on the island of Panay in the Philippines is home to many endangered species of animals and plants, some of which are endemic.

The problem
Due to the global pandemic, many people in the Philippines are currently unable to earn money. Because of this, cases of poaching in the natural park have increased drastically.

Solution
To prevent poaching, our rangers now have to patrol the rainforest in the park more frequently than before. Furthermore, due to the protective regulations connected to COVID-19, the costs of ranger deployments are rising, since rangers need to travel to the forest individually.

To cover those additional costs and to make it possible for our rangers to effectively protect the natural park and its wildlife, we need your support.

What is the project goal and who is the project for?

We would like to give friends and sympathizers of PhilinCon and friends of the Philippine rainforest the possibility to support us in this current crisis with the finance of deployments of forest rangers to reduce poaching to a minimum, until the situation improves.

Why would you support this project?

Our natural park on Panay island is unique and is worthy of protection because it consists of a lot of primary rainforest. In the last 25 years, we have implemented multiple successful measures to protect the local rainforest and its inhabitants and we have built an efficient infrastructure in the area. Thanks to us, is the population of endangered Hornbill has seen an increase and we were able to create alternative, sustainable livestyles for many locals. We are passionate about our work and we are grateful for your support, without which we would be unable to carry out our projects.
In supporting us, you help those who are suffering heavily from the current crisis and you are playing a part in the combat of species extinction.

How will we use the money if the project is successfully funded?

The money we raise is used to cover the costs of deployments of the 16 rangers in the Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park. We pay for their travels to and from the park and for their food. Furthermore, we replace their old equipment, so that they can patrol the rainforest.

Our second goal is to raise 2300 €, with this money we finance the rehabilitation of confiscated wildlife. To achieve this, we fund food, care-taking, and other fixcosts.

A part of this money will go into our alternative livelihoods project. In this project we provide crops and livestock for cultivation, consumption and sale.
