"The print I chose is a manipulated photograph of a sunset. When you invert a beautiful sunset, you get a pitch-black sun. In an instant, the realities of more and more human beings are shaken away, turned upside down every day. Darkness, the black sun, hangs over so many lives. This print embodies the quest to truly grasp what "dark times" mean.
What if one day we woke up and the sun appeared black? Would it awaken us? Would we finally realize that something is deeply wrong, and that change is urgent? Could a black sun erase the shadows of ignorance? Or would we, under this full black sun, at last see clearly enough to save ourselves from these dark times?"
i wish, for one day, the skies have lost all the mercy that is there,
so angry for all that has been done under, for all that it has witnessed.
i wish, for one day, we wake up to a black sun, and to see to bring an end to our miserable stand

The print is a hand-scanned frame from a 16mm celluloid film strip of the documentary KashKash by Lea Najar. This film captures the crises in Beirut from 2019 to 2022 through the eyes of pigeons and their fanciers. The frame is one from thousands on that strip. It shows a Kashamem player that catches a pigeon and removes its flight feathers, which are crucial for its ability to fly.
I filmed this scene during my second extended stay in Beirut; my first visit was in 2017, when I fell in love with a vibrant, modern city, full of culture, diversity, and endless possibilities. I met Lebanese people who exuded strength, positivity, and hope for a brighter future.
When I returned during the port explosion, and the subsequent financial crisis to work on KashKash, the city and its people had changed significantly.
An elderly man once told us in a barbershop that Beirut is like an old lady trying to hide her scars with makeup, but the process of decay is unstoppable.
The current situation is unbearable and unacceptable; it must come to an immediate end.
I always admire the strength, hope, creativety and openness of the Lebanese people, and I continue to hope for positive change.

This work is by cinematographer & photographer Christine Leuhusen, she is based in Prague & Stockholm. "I chose it because it is peaceful and calm, something I definitely think we need more of. At the same time it's a violent landscape. What you see in the distance is Spain and this passage of water is the meeting point for the Atlantic and the Mediterranean - what divides Africa and Europe. With all the hope, dreams and sorrows that it carries."
